Tri Mumpuni

Founder, IBEKA Indonesia

tri-mumpuni Tri Mumpuni (Puni) is an agriculture engineer who is campaigning to replace diesel power generation into renewable energy.

Together with key stakeholders such as The Ministry of Energy and Mineral resources and PT PLN, the Indonesian state owned electricity company, Puni develops micro hydroelectricity projects to generate economic growth in the rural areas.

Through her organisation, People Centered Business and Economic Institute (IBEKA), she has implemented more than 60 micro hydroprojects. She champions the Public Private Partnership Model to build small power plants, in which the community owns 50% and the private sector 50%. The income from energy sales goes back to the village in the form of a community development fund. She has been successfully implementing this with UN-ESCAP support. Today, she is famous for her “community based electrical power implementation” model in the villages.

Puni was recognised by President Barack Obama at the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship in Washington D.C. on April 26 – 27, 2010 as an entrepreneur who has improved Indonesian rural communities.

Her other citations and accomplishments include becoming an Eisenhower Fellow in 2009, Woman of The Year in TEMPO Magazine in 2006, Ashoka Fellow in 2006, and a Climate Hero of WWF International in 2005.

Dr Hj Supry Hj Awg Ladi

Acting Director of Transportation, Ministry of Communications

dr-hj-supry Dr Hj Supry obtained his First Degree in Civil Engineering in 1989, professional teacher training certificate in 1991, Master of Science in 1994 and conferred with a Philosophy of Doctorate (PhD) in the area of Traffic Management and Road Safety in 2007, all from the United Kingdom Universities. He first started his career as an Education Officer serving Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal in 1989. He was transferred to the Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) in 1995 before moving to the Ministry of Communications as Acting Director of Transportation in April 2012. At ITB, Dr Hj Supry was a Principal Lecturer and active in conducting project and research in road safety and public transport related areas. In addition to that, he has held few substantial posts such as Director of International and Public Relations and Director of the Centre for Road Safety Studies. He is currently a Member of the Board of Architect, Professional Engineer and Quantity Surveyors (APEQS); a Member of the Board of Municipal representing Ministry of Communications and Chairman of the Transport Cluster of the BIMP-EAGA.

Ms Elizabeth Sim

HR Manager, HSBC

Elizabeth Sim is an active member of the HSBC Brunei Speakers Group which is affiliated to Toastmasters International, a worldwide communication and leadership training organization. She joined in 2007 and has participated in numerous speech contests locally and regionally. So far, one of her greatest achievements is to represent Brunei and East Malaysia in a recent speech contest held in Sibu this year in May ,in which she was placed 1st Runner Up against the best clubs from Indonesia.

Through Toastmasters, she has spearheaded Youth Leadership Programs for local and international schools in Brunei such as PTE Meragang and Jerudong International School, helping kids to overcome their fear in public speaking. She was also the Organizing Chairperson for a Toastmasters Convention held in Brunei in 2011, catering to 150 delegates from Brunei and Malaysia. Her journey continues today as the President of the HSBC Brunei Speakers Group (HSG).

She currently contributes as a moderator, host and facilitator in Brunei working closely with various companies such as The Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and AsiaInc Forum. She also juggles her personal and professional life as a freelance wedding emcee, an event management consultant, improvisational and theatre actress and her day job as a HR Manager in charge of learning at HSBC.

Mr Von Hernandez

Executive Director, Greenpeace Southeast Asia

von-hernandez Von Hernandez is the Executive Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia (GPSEA), leading the environmental group’s programs and operations in the Southeast Asian region. Previously, he served as Campaigns Director for the organisation, and was responsible for driving the group’s campaigns in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines on a number of issues including climate change, forests, sustainable agriculture and toxics pollution.

An environmental activist for more than 20 years, Von initiated and led a number of campaigns in the Philippines including the approval of landmark laws like the Ecological Waste Management Act and the Clean Air Act. He also spearheaded campaigns to rehabilitate the Pasig River as well as efforts to clean-up toxic sites in former US military bases in the country. He founded and spearheaded various environmental coalitions at the national and international levels including the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), Waste Not Asia, Lakbay Kalikasan, the Ecowaste coalition, and the Sagip Pasig Movement.

In 2003, Von was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for his work which led to the first national ban on waste incineration. The Goldman Prize is considered to be the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for grassroots environmental activists. Being the first Prize recipient from the Philippines, Asia Inc magazine named him as one of Asia’s young movers and shakers in 2004. In 2007, he was also included in Time Magazine’s Heroes for the Environment, joining other innovative and influential protectors of the environment like Al Gore and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai. More recently, Von was listed among the top 20 most trusted Filipinos by Reader’s Digest in its nationwide Trust Poll in 2010.

Von graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor’s degree in English. He recently completed his Master in Public Management (MPM) degree from the National University of Singapore.

YM Dyg Hjh Normah Suria Hayati binti Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr.) Hj Mohd Jamil Al Sufri

Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources

Hajah Normah S.H. Jamil received her BSc (Hons) Applied Biology from the University of London and her MSc in Botany from The National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia).

She held various positions in the Department of Agriculture during her 24 years with the department – Head of Biotechnology Unit, Head of Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory, Head of Product Development, Head of Research and Development, Head of Agribusiness Development Division, Deputy Director of Agriculture. She was the Director of Agriculture and Agrifood in May 2007. She has played a key role in the department’s milestone, led the formation of the Strategic Plan for the Department of Agriculture 2008 – 2013 and contributed to the country’s Food Security Program to ensure sufficient level of rice production in Brunei Darussalam.

In September 2010, she was appointed as the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources to further the development of primary industry sectors under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

Her career milestones included the development of the Brunei Halal Brand, Brunei Halal Standards for Food, the Brunei Agro-Tech Park, the establishment of the commercial structure for Brunei Halal, launching of the International Halal Product Expo (IHPE), and launching of The Agriculture and Agrifood Fair, both of which were held in Brunei Darussalam.

Hajah Normah S.H. Jamil is currently the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.
