Mr Anwar Mohammad

Founder, Society for Community Outreach & Training

anwar-mohd Anwar Mohammad is the Founder of Society for Community Outreach & Training (SCOT), a youth-led initiative that focuses on sustainable ways and strategies of creating projects which help the underprivileged in Brunei Darussalam.

Under his leadership in SCOT, Anwar has pioneered several successful projects that have created positive contributions towards the society. These include the SCOT Green Xchange Project, which allows residents to exchange recyclable materials with commodities (i.e. rice); SCOT Agriculture, which focuses on the underprivileged to earn an extra source of income through backyard farming; and SCOT Education, which focuses on teaching the English Language to underprivileged communities in Brunei. SCOT has also been an umbrella for Anwar to mentor younger generations of UBD to harness their leadership skills and take lead roles in SCOT.

Anwar Mohammad previously represented Brunei in various international conferences as a youth representative. He has had the privilege of joining APEC Voices of the Future for three consecutive years since 2009 in Singapore, Japan and Hawaii respectively. He represented Brunei in the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) in 2010 and Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) in 2011, both organized by Harvard University.

In 2011, Anwar Mohammad graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Economics from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam as an awardee of the Vice-Chancellor’s Medal.

Anwar Mohammad has been working with the Brunei Investment Agency since 2012.

Ms Khairunnisa Ash’ari

Co-Founder & Community Engagement Director
Green Brunei

khairunnisa-ashari Khairunnisa is the Community Engagement Director for Green Brunei. She is responsible mainly for facilitating and running the projects and programmes under Green Brunei and recruiting youth to be part of the team. Green Brunei has organised various programmes focusing on environmental awareness, education and conservation, including talks, seminars and projects.

She is also an active youth leader and Head of International Relations Bureau in the Brunei Youth Council. She seeks to engage youth in meaningful participation and increase awareness about policy issues amongst the youth in Brunei. She is also driving the establishment of a global presence for Brunei youth.

From Jan to May 2012, Khairunnisa volunteered as a Capacity Building Team Outreach Team Leader for Brunei under the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Major Group on Children and Youth (UNCSD- MGCY). One of her initiatives was the Brunei+20: National Youth Seminar for Sustainable Development, which gathered youth representatives from around Brunei to learn about sustainable development and generate a set of recommendations embodying the “Brunei Youth Statement” for Rio+20.

Khairunnisa is also a Global Ambassador for One Million Lights, an NGO whose mission is to improve the daily lives of children and adults by providing clean and healthy lighting. With the help of various organisations and individuals from within and outside Brunei, she has successfully distributed 140 solar lights in Cambodia.

Khairunnisa has represented Brunei in several programmes locally and regionally including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Cambodia, Philippines and India on both environmental and youth empowerment issues. She has been involved in organising several regional-based programmes such as the Commonwealth Youth Programme Asia Centre’s Policy Environment Assessment Score Workshop, Regional Youth Forum, ASEAN Civil Society Conference/ASEAN Peoples’ Forum and the Brunei-U.S. English Language Enrichment Project for ASEAN.

She graduated in BA Public Policy and Administration from Universiti Brunei Darussalam with a year in University of Kent. Before pursuing her Master’s degree, Khairunnisa is currently involved in other various causes in international, environmental and youth fields in addition to her work with Green Brunei.

Ms Hjh Siti Rozana DP Hj Md Yunos

Head of Corporate Services
BAG Networks Sdn Bhd

rozana-yunos Rozana Yunos is the Head of Corporate Services at BAG Networks Sdn Bhd. In her current role she oversees the running of Human Resources, Facilities and Services, Corporate Communications and Finance.

Prior to joining the IT industry, Rozana was the Learning and Development Manager in HSBC Brunei and also a Tutor in Universiti Brunei Darussalam. She graduated with a degree in Accountancy with Law from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom.

Rozana has been a Toastmaster for 10 years and a part of its local chapter; the Brunei Speakers’ Club as well as setting up an advanced platform for members to continue their self-development. She has attained the Advanced Communicator Gold title whereby she has presented over 40 speeches in the club, at various competitions and has been invited for several local speaking engagements. She also has served in various leadership roles in the Executive Committee as well as at the international level.

David Vincent MA(Oxon)

Head of the UK Foreign Office’s South East Asia Climate Change Network

david-vincent David Vincent is Head of the UK Foreign Office’s South East Asia Climate Change Network. The Network engages and works with ASEAN countries on key climate change and energy themes, including:

  • The UNFCCC negotiations;
  • Low carbon energy supply (e.g. renewable energy);
  • Low carbon energy demand (e.g. energy efficiency);
  • Climate impacts and implications;
  • Forestry.

In respect of these themes, the Network manages the effective deployment of UK climate finance to the ASEAN region (except in Indonesia which has its own team). The Foreign Office’s own Prosperity Fund will spend about £600,000 on climate and energy projects in SE Asia this year. Projects and programmes under the £2.9 billion International Climate Fund are being implemented and developed in ASEAN countries on forestry, NAMAs, energy efficiency and low carbon energy policy.

David Vincent is based at the British High Commission in Singapore. Previously, he spent four years at the British Embassy in Moscow dealing with climate change in the run up to Copenhagen.

Mr Haji Sofi Sharbini

Environment-focused HSSE Practitioner

Haji Sofi Sharbini’s interest in environment began as far back as his university years as an Industrial Attachment student in Scotland, UK.

He began his career in 2001 as a Project Officer under the Institutional Strengthening Project for the Montreal Protocol funded via the United Nations Environment Programme. Subsequently working as an Environmental Officer with the Environmental Agency of Brunei, he expanded his work to include other multi-lateral environmental agreements, notably the Basel Convention on the Trans-boundary Movement of Hazardous Waste, Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent. He joined the National Oil Company in early 2006, during which he was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship to further his studies in Environmental, Health & Safety Management Masters level, followed by a one-year secondment with an International Oil Company. He is currently employed as an HSSE Executive for Environment.

He is happily married with 3 children. His family is his source of strength for his perseverance and persistence in understanding Health, Safety and Environment from a Sustainable Development perspective.

Ms Jenny Malai Ali

Radio & TV Presenter
Kristal FM

Jenny has been in the broadcasting industry for more than 15 years, having hosted tv shows in both Brunei and Malaysia, and as radio presenter and newsreader in Brunei.

She is currently with Kristal FM hosting the noon drive-time show and co-hosting the breakfast show.

An active mc for the private sector, jenny also enjoys a regular schedule of speaking engagements with local schools and colleges.

Jenny’s achievement includes winning for best rtb newsreader in 2009, and giving birth to two young spirited children.
