Eight schools honoured for environment initiatives

THREE schools were presented with the Youth Go Green Initiative Award, while five schools bagged the National Schools Eco-Video Competition accolade at the fourth AsiaInc Forum National Environment Conference 2011 yesterday.

Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School and Rimba II Primary School won the Youth Go Green Initiative Award.

The awards aimed to recognise the contributions of young Bruneians in promoting environmental awareness as well as stimulating their creativity in taking action for their future through innovative green solutions.

Sayyidina Ali Secondary School’s project is titled “Coral reef: ‘Rainforest of the Sea’. Together we can conserve it”.

Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School’s project was on growing edible plants consisting of vegetables, herbs and local fruit trees, while Rimba II Primary School won for their waste management and recycling project.

The other finalists were Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Jerudong International School and Sekolah Cemerlang Abejess. A total of 18 entries were received from 15 schools for the Youth Go Green Initiative Award.

In the National Schools Eco-Video Competition, the schools were required to produce a two-minute video of their environmental projects to educate the public about the importance of taking action and adopting a green lifestyle.

Persekutuan Guru-Guru Melayu Brunei (PGGMB) or Brunei Malay Teachers’ Association Sungai Akar School was awarded for their recycling and tree planting initiative video.

Sayyidina Hassan Secondary School won for its “Solution for Pollution Enzymes” video, while Berakas Secondary School took the most entertaining video (for age 14 and below) award with their clip “Be responsible”.

The most entertaining video award for the age 15 and above category went to Chung Ching Middle School with the video, “Go Green activity: Eco Garden”.

Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College won the Best Production Video award for “Tumblerist”.

“Tumblerist” is a video urging students to use tumblers instead of plastic cups for their drinks. “A lot of the students were using plastic cups (for their drinks from the canteen), we thought we could change that,” said 17-year-old Mohammad Noor Ariffin.

The four-member team has been urged to broadcast their winning eco-video on state-broadcaster Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB).

“Somebody suggested that our eco-video be featured in RTB, and we are hoping (that it will),” said another team member, Nurol Izazi Hj Zaini.

The participating schools were only allowed to submit up to three videos.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah presented the prizes to the winning schools.

The Youth Go Green Initiative award, themed “Saving the World, Saving Our Future” was organised in collaboration with the Science Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre.

Jerudong International School (JIS) and International School Brunei (ISB) organised the eco-video competition with the support of AsiaInc Forum and HSBC. It was open to all government and non-government schools.

The one-day National Environment Conference, featured speakers from Singapore, Germany, South Africa and Australia, together with leading local figures.
